About

Ricardo Smith

I'm an Embedded Systems Engineering Manager at Clairways, where I lead development of a wearable respiratory monitor. I manage a small engineering team delivering hardware and firmware improvements that have significantly reduced power consumption and improved system reliability.

My work spans the full product lifecycle — from system-level architecture and mixed-signal PCB design through firmware development, production management, and backend infrastructure deployment.

I hold a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Dartmouth College, where I graduated with a 3.52 GPA and was a Ben Carson and Questbridge scholar.

Embedded Systems Engineering Manager

Clairways

  • Led development and testing of a wearable respiratory monitor, managing a small engineering team to deliver key hardware and firmware improvements.
  • Architected and validated the primary hardware platform: a dense, six-layer mixed-signal PCB, driving major gains in power efficiency and reliability.
  • Directed firmware development integrating multiple sensors and peripherals using I2C, SPI, I2S, and UART with modular, unit-tested driver libraries.
  • Managed device production from prototype through final assembly, collaborating with contract manufacturers and suppliers.
  • Designed and deployed backend infrastructure using AWS, Python, Docker, and Terraform.

Embedded Systems Engineer

Clairways (Intern)

  • Collaborated with the CTO to develop power-efficient firmware for a wearable respiratory monitor on ultra-low-power microcontrollers.
  • Designed and implemented a lightweight IMU driver from scratch, communicating over I2C for resource-constrained embedded systems.
  • Designed and validated a sensor interface for processing motion and acoustic data on an ARM Cortex-M4 MCU.
